Athens City Manager Elizabeth Borstad, Community Development Manager Donna Meredith, and Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Board President Jeff Whitnah toured the DS Brown plant in Athens last week, taking a firsthand look at one of the community’s long-standing industrial contributors.
They were guided through the facility by Plant Manager Duke Bedsole, whose 31 years of service at the plant have provided him with a unique perspective on its evolution. Despite changes in ownership and branding over the decades, the plant’s mission has remained steadfast: producing high-quality bridge bearings.
The Athens facility manufactures approximately 40,000 bridge bearings each year, utilizing steel, rubber, or a combination of both. With a team of 30 to 35 employees, the plant plays an important role in supporting infrastructure projects nationwide. Bridge bearings are essential components, allowing bridges to handle movement, load distribution, and temperature changes while maintaining structural integrity.
DS Brown, a company with more than 130 years of experience in designing and engineering solutions for bridges, highways, and airfields, has been a leader in addressing evolving infrastructure challenges. The Athens plant embodies this legacy, ensuring that quality and innovation remain at the forefront of its operations.
The visit highlighted the importance of supporting established industries in Athens and underscored the city’s commitment to fostering partnerships that promote economic growth and job stability.
