The Athens City Council approved the Athens Economic Development Corporation’s 2026 strategic plan at its meeting Monday, Aug. 25. The plan focuses on helping local businesses grow and remain in Athens, bringing in new employers, and getting land ready for future development.
An important part of the plan is working with Athens ISD, Trinity Valley Community College, and other partners to train workers so they are prepared for local jobs. The AEDC will also use grants to help fund community projects to improve the quality of life in Athens.
The plan also highlights Athens’ growing role as a hub for medical manufacturing, building on recent partnerships in that sector.
Another major goal is real estate development. The AEDC will use the city’s new Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone to help fund infrastructure and create more ready-to-build sites for businesses. By preparing land, training workers, and building strong partnerships, the AEDC hopes to grow job opportunities, support local employers, and make Athens a place where businesses and families can thrive.
