Healthcare
The largest employer in Athens is UT Health East Texas with over 550 doctors, nurses and staff. The state-of-the-art hospital is part of the University of Texas health care system that includes the UT Tyler campus, soon to have the newest medical university education program in Texas. This affiliation means UT Health East Texas can deliver greater access to world-class medicine, health centers, technology and research.
The hospital also works with local agencies and authorities to assist people with behavioral health issues, adult and child protection needs, and treatment for victims of sexual assault.
With Tyler to the East and the Dallas-Ft. Worth area to the West, there are well over a dozen other health care institutions, many world-class.
